Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) is an emerging technology that combines membrane technology with biological reactions in wastewater treatment, also known as membrane separation activated sludge method. It is a water treatment technology that replaces traditional biochemical treatment technologies such as secondary sedimentation tanks and sand filters with membrane filtration. The membrane module only plays a role in separating mud and water during use.
 
  1. Good Effluent Water Quality
Due to the high efficiency of membrane retention, the concentration of suspended solids in the effluent water is basically zero; the retention of free bacteria and some difficult to degrade macromolecular particulate matter, so that the concentration of activated sludge in the biochemical reactor can be about 2-6 times higher than the traditional process; membrane effluent is not affected by the expansion of sludge and other factors in the bioreactor. Therefore, the effluent quality of MBR is high and can meet the requirements of water quality for reuse.
 
  1. Small Amount of Residual Sludge
For the traditional activated sludge process, the long sludge age will lead to the increase of suspended solids in the effluent, MBR due to the membrane retention effect makes the long sludge age operation does not affect the effluent water quality. The reduction in the amount of residual sludge can reduce the cost of sludge treatment and simplify the operation of the sewage treatment process, especially for small sewage treatment plants and decentralized sewage treatment facilities, its superiority is more prominent.
 
  1. Compact Equipment, Small Footprint
Due to the high concentration of sludge in the bioreactor, the volumetric load can be greatly increased, and the membrane module is used instead of the secondary sedimentation tank and filtration equipment, therefore, the footprint of the membrane bioreactor can be greatly reduced compared with the conventional biological treatment process.
Membrane bioreactors are divided into two types, built-in type and external type, depending on the use of the membrane. The built-in type is to impregnate the membrane directly in the biochemical reaction tank, and pump clean water directly from the membrane element, while the external type is to pump the water from the bioreactor through the membrane module to carry out a wrong-flow filtration cycle, and get clean water through.
